We’ve had a look at our best choices in hand held units so you can see what’s available all on one page. Our favourite is the Scotts Wizz and we’ll give you an overview of the features of this and each other one below so you can check if it will work for the job you need it for.

Best Hand Held Spreaders 2018
Scotts Wizz Hand-Held Spreader
One of the things that put people off a hand held spreader is the weight on your wrist and arm as you hold it up so that you can crank with the other hand. Where the Scotts Wizz Hand-Held Spreader is a bit different is that you don’t have to hand crank so you can hold the machine down by your side and the broadcasting is done by a battery operated system. This means you can hold it in either hand or switch between if your arm gets tired.
The Scotts Wizz is a broadcast spreader, made of plastic and it is lightweight. It consists of a hopper with the handle above. The handle has a trigger to start the spreading. There is a large dial on the end of the unit so you can set your flow rate which should be shown on the back of the garden product packaging.
At the bottom is the broadcasting plate which has a spread of about 5 feet. You have an edge guard lever so that you can stop the product from going down one side to protect areas of the garden or paths. Any granular garden product can be spread using the Scotts Wizz making this versatile, very easy to use and at a reasonable price, just the things you look for in a good hand held spreader.
Earthway 2750 Hand-Operated Bag Spreader/Seeder
The Earthway 2750 Hand-Operated Bag Spreader/Seeder is a very lightweight spreader which is made of a nylon bag which holds the seeds or garden products and at the base of the bag is a plastic casing which houses the broadcasting plate and gears with the crank attached.
The Earthway 2750 is easy to carry as it has a shoulder strap which goes over your head with the bag down your side. This is a broadcast spreader and the distance can be adjusted by the speed in which you turn the handle. It can hold up to 25lb of seed but you can adjust that for your comfort.
The flow settings are on the side of the casing at the base of the bag, you adjust the slider to the number you want and tighten with a wing nut, the lever to open the plate and allow the product to flow is pulled back and holds behind the lever, it is spring loaded. You can use any type of granular product or seeds in this bag and you’re not limited to a small area, if you can walk it you can seed it. All the reasons you need to buy the Earthway 2750 shoulder spreader.
Solo 421 20-Pound Capacity Portable Spreader
The Solo 421 20-Pound Capacity Portable Spreader is slightly different from others as it is a plastic hopper which you carry in front of you with a shoulder strap holding it in place. The hopper has a screw top lid so no product will get wet if the weather turns.
Like a bag spreader the broadcasting plate, gears and crank are at the bottom of it. It stands up on the floor so it’s easy to fill or empty, can be used with any granular product and can hold up to 20lbs.
The flow control is on the side at the bottom of the unit and the slider is set and held in place by a wing nut. The lever to open the flow only opens up to the slider controlling how much product flows through to the plate.
This Solo 421 also has a directional flow lever so you can aim the flow centrally in front of you or more to the left or right if you are avoiding pathways. There is also an edge guard so that you can cut off one side totally. The broadcast is controlled by the speed that you turn the crank so the faster you turn the further it throws. This is a little more expensive but solid and long lasting.
Scotts Easy Hand-Held Broadcast Spreader
The Scotts Easy Hand-Held Broadcast Spreader is a small hopper style broadcast spreader. This is great for small areas although it can still cover up to 1000 square feet.
It is a moulded unit that consists of the hopper, a handle on the back with a trigger to release the product on the plate and a flow control with 5 settings to handle different types of garden product as long as it is granular.
There is a small hand crank on the side or the Scotts Easy to start your feed spreading and it depends on how fast you turn the crank and the speed you walk to get the best distance of spread you want. There are pros and cons to this Scotts hand held spreader but it is a cheap spreader that is small enough to be easily stored, great if you are on a small budget.
Earthway 3100 Professional Hand Crank Broadcast Spreader
If you’re looking for something a bit more professional that can do the job then check out this Earthway 3100 Professional Hand Crank Broadcast Spreader.
This is a hopper type of broadcast spreader that you wear on the front of your chest like the Solo. It’s held in place with a harness and has a cover for the top of the spreader to stop wind whipping any up in your face.
It has a high speed gearbox which can give you spread widths of up to 15 feet and you can adjust the evenness of the spread with EV-N-SPRED®PRO Dual Port Adjustable Shut-Off System.
The hopper on this Earthway broadcast spreader can hold 40lb of garden product if you can manage to lift that much and it has a tubular steel chassis to hold it. This is a bit more expensive but if you have to use a hand held spreader because of hilly terrain this might be worth investing in.
If you think you are going to spread a larger area and have to carry a load which you think will be too heavy to carry in your left hand then you might need to go for something like the Scotts Wizz or the spreaders that have shoulder straps. If you only have a very small area to treat then a mini hand held will probably do the job you need. Our favourite of the best hand held spreaders 2018 is the Scotts Wizz Hand-Held Spreader just because you can carry it in one hand and there is no hand cranking involved. Why not check out one of the above to see which one would suit your garden the best.
