Brinly BS36BH Tow Behind Broadcast Spreader, 175-Pound Review
When looking for a tow behind spreader you need to know if you want a broadcasting spreader or a drop spreader and that it will easily attach to your lawn garden tractor.
Also you need to know it will hold sufficient product to cover the area you want to deal with and not have to refill too often if at all. Let’s check the features offered on this Brinly tow behind spreader
Features of Brinly BS36BH….
- Extra-large 175 pound capacity poly hopper covers yards 1 acre or larger
- Directional Spread Pattern Control guarantees even spread patterns and the widest spread widths of materials
- Fully enclosed gearbox and stainless steel hardware, shaft and agitator eliminates down time and prevents corrosion
This spreader, first of all is a broadcast spreader and it has an extra large hopper which can hold 175 pounds of product. That quantity can cover a large garden area of up to 1 acre or even larger.
The Brinley BS36BH comes to you unassembled so you need to be aware that you will have to put it together before you start. The instructions are included and there is also a video on the Amazon.com product page which goes over the assembly so you have something to follow if like me you prefer to watch what to do rather than read what to do. It attaches to your tractor with a hitch pin held in place with a cotter pin.
The spreader has a large poly hopper and in the bottom is a metal pin which turns around when the wheels turn and it agitates the product towards the opening, to keep the product flowing.
The gearbox is enclosed in a plastic casing and the broadcast plate is also durable plastic which won’t rust. The metal parts are in stainless steel which is strong and durable and help to prevent corrosion.
This Brinly BS36BH Spreader is a tow behind but is only suitable to be pulled along at around 3 mph so you need to make sure that your tractor doesn’t pull it too fast as you could strip out the gearbox.
The control lever is situated relatively close to the the hitching point so you should be able to reach it easily to open the lever when starting your spreading. The lever is spring loaded and will go back as far as the handle stop on gauge plate.
The gauge plate has levels on it of 1 – 10 with half levels also marked on it. It has a handle stop which is adjusted by loosening the 4 pronged screw-in knob and moving it to the desired level then tighten back up.
The level you choose is dependent on the product you want to spread, it will either tell you on the back of the garden product or there is a guideline table in the instruction manual.
Pull behind a garden tractor
Once you have attached your Brinly BS36BH Tow Behind Broadcast Spreader and set up your flow level you are ready to load your product into the hopper. You can load up to 175 pounds of product for spreading on your land.
That is quite a heavy load and it is held up and moved easily with the pneumatic wheels attached. The wheel diameter is 13 inches and the wheel base is 25 inches. This allows for a smooth operation when the spreader is being pulled over the ground.
Once the lever on the spreader has been opened when you start spreading, the feed starts dropping through the opening in the base of the hopper and falls on broadcasting plate that spins underneath the hopper and throws the feed in a semi circle with a range of 12 – 16 feet depending on the product being spread and the speed that you are travelling, the faster you go the further the spread.
As the product works its way down the hopper you may have to stop and push down anything that sticks to the sides as the product tends to move down the centre first.
You can use a variety of products in this Brinly BS36BH spreader, seeds, feeds, weedkillers and even ice melt in the winter time, as long as the product is granular and dry it should feed through easily without blockage.
Customers have found that the spreader is fairly easy to put together and is a well constructed product.
One buyer found that using this spreader made a 3 hour job turn into a 30 minute job.
It works well for a large lawn, very stable and spreads seeds and ferilizers very evenly.
Negatives found are some people have had a problem reaching the control lever from their seat and vibration can make the lever jump off the stop. Some people had missing parts so couldn’t assemble.
You can make a large job much smaller and quicker with a tow behind spreader and the Brinly BS36BH Tow Behind Broadcast Spreader, 175-Pound is a good choice if you have a large area to maintain. If you want to keep your large lawn healthy, vibrant and growing strong the right garden spreader can make it easier to apply different products to help you do the job.
