This Earthway 2750 Hand-Operated Bag Spreader/Seeder comprises of a corrosion, tear and weather resistant, zippered nylon bag which holds your fertiliser or other garden product. You can load up to 25 pounds of product in the bag but it will more likely depend on how much you can carry. There is a shoulder strap attached that helps you to hold it comfortably
There is a contoured moulded base attached to the bag, this gives it structure and strength and houses the direct drive gear box below which is driven by a crank handle that comes out of the side. The handle when it is turned spins a circular distribution plate below the bag and that distributes the seed or product.
In the opening at the base of the bag is the oscillating shut-off plate which helps keep the product moving on the spinning plate and helps in stopping the product from sticking together and blocking the exit point. There is also a spring loaded shut off that stops the product from coming out of the bag when you need it to and it’s adjustable to regulate the rate of the product coming out by a metal clip and screw.
How to use the Earthway 2750
This garden spreader stands easily on the ground when you want to fill it with seed or fertiliser and the zip on the top is a handy extra to stop you spilling any of it while you are picking it up and putting it over your shoulder.
The Earthway 2750 can be used for areas of 20 -2000 square meters so more than suitable for small to medium plots, and the amount of times you will need to refill the bag will of course be dependant on how much you can carry comfortably and walk. The flexibility and lightness of the spreader and strap makes it suitable to use whether you’re a large hefty bloke or a small woman.
Setting the rate
The rate that you set the Earthway spreader to are usually found on the back of the product or on the bottom of the spreader there is a list of all kinds of seeds and fertilisers with settings for guidance.
The small metal adjustment slider is held in place with a wing nut and the settings are marked on the small plastic runners it slides on, just set it to the correct number in the guide from 1- 4 which is also broken into quarters so you can get a precise measure.
The spring loaded shut off lever is pulled back and is held open by the metal adjustment slider which has a raised corner to hold it in place. There is a handle next to these levers which stops them being moved without manual intervention and allows you to hold onto the bag for a little more control and you can flick the shut off lever on and off as required easily with your thumb.
Controlling the flow
Once you’ve loaded the Earthway 2750 and the rate has been set you are ready to go. Start turning the handle, then open the lever and the product will start broadcasting from the circular distribution plate.
You fill find that if you turn the handle faster the seed will fly further from the plate and you may need to adjust your step speed, finding a steady rhythm of stepping and turning will become more accurate with practice.
If you need to be careful at borders and edges you may find it helpful to tilt the bag slightly to the side which will bring the angle down and slow the turn so you get a closer dispatch of product which can be controlled a bit more accurately.
If you need to go over the area twice and you are in a small space you don’t always have to turn around flicking the control lever on and off you can just walk backwards in small areas giving you a bit more control, that’s if you can walk backwards while turning the handle forwards at the same time, a bit like patting your head while rubbing your tummy.
This hand held spreader definitely can be used in winter on those icy paths, you need to only use processed salts or ice melt, it won’t work with grit or rock salt. A good all year-round piece of kit.
Most buyers have found that this is faster to use and can cover more ground with less hassle than more expensive spreaders.
One customer found it to be easier to use and control than a towable spreader.
Most buyers are finding it still works well after a couple of years of use, so well worth the price paid
Negatives are the plastic clips holding the shoulder straps can break, the spreader is under guarantee and they will replace them.
The numbers for the settings are a little hard to see, could be better designed.
You need to wear old clothes or an apron as it can get product onto your clothes when using
This Earthway 2750 is an easy piece of equipment to use, and very easy to store. This garden spreader can cover quite a bit of ground quickly and it doesn’t matter how difficult the shape of your garden or if it is hilly, as long as you can walk and turn at the same time you can seed it, fertilise it or salt it.
