Scotts Easy Hand-Held Broadcast Spreader Overview
This is a small hand-held spreader with a hopper that can hold enough product to spread 1000 square feet. The spreader is designed for you to hold in your left hand and crank the handle in your right hand. If you feel that will be too hard on your wrist read our review on the Scotts Wizz hand-held spreader which can be held in either hand and is battery controlled.
This Scotts hand spreader is made from plastic meaning that there is no problems with rust. It has a small plastic agitator in the base of the hopper and it spreads the seed or fertilizer by dropping the product on the broadcast plate which spins around based on the handle turns.
Depending on what product you use there are different Scotts hand held spreader settings that can be adjusted by the lever in the handle, this adjusts the hole size so it drops the correct amount of product suggested on the reverse of the pack.
Being a mini broadcast spreader the distance of the spread is affected by the speed in which you turn the handle, so slowing down can give you more control around the edges of your lawn. To open and close the flow you just press and release the button in the handle. Because it has different flow settings you can use different products making it usable all year round.
We’d like to give you our summary of the pros and cons below
If you’re going to be using a hand-held spreader for maintaining your garden, one of the most important aspects of it has got to be the weight of the spreader. When you get your product into the hopper you don’t want it to be more than 2-3lb to carry around in one hand. That might be less of an effort for a man who is naturally stronger than a woman, but it can still be uncomfortable regardless. Lightweight is definitely a plus. If you struggle with this type of design an over the shoulder bag type of spreader might be easier for you.
Fast to use
One of the benefits of a broadcast spreader is the fact that it is usually a fast way to spread you products with the correct amount of product being controlled with the flow settings on the spreader. The spread width can be from 5-10 feet depending on how quickly you turn the handle and in a small back yard that won’t take long to cover with a small broadcast spreader. Even if you have a larger area that needs the hopper to be filled more than once the job can still be done relatively quickly and can leave you more time to do other garden jobs.
Can be used for various products
This Scotts Easy Hand-Held Broadcast Spreader as with most garden spreaders can be used for multiple types of product as long as it is granular or seeds which is less likely to clump as it works it’s way through to the broadcast plate. People use this small spreader to re-seed areas of the lawn and fertilizing at different times of the year as it’s required. It can be used for weeding but with a broadcast spreader it would be harder to control the spread to make sure it doesn’t get into places you might not want, like borders. This would have to be well cleaned out afterwards too. This can also be used for ice melt in the winter time.
Can only crank with right hand
The design of this hand-held spreader and many products with a hand crank you will find that the crank is situated on the right hand side. If you are left handed you might find it a bit difficult to work it smoothly or you might have to consider a hand-held spreader that can be used with either hand like the Scotts Wizz.
Product jamming in the spreader
A lot of people have found that no matter what product they use they can have problems with turning the handle and the product working it’s way through to the broadcast plate. Some people feel that the agitator is part of the cause. They also feel that the plastic gears and the small handle doesn’t produce enough force to get the product through easily.
Handle can easily break
There are a few customers who have found that the handle is too small to create enough torque to move the gears. When the product is sticking in the hopper the agitator won’t turn and the handle eventually breaks off.
This is a handy little spreader that is cheap to buy, easy to use and small to store. Many people have found that it does the job of dealing with maintaining a small garden well enough to keep them happy. It’s made of plastic which seems to cause some problems in the function but makes it a simple process to wipe out or wash out to keep the gears clean. This can be useful as you can use the Scotts Easy Hand-Held Broadcast Spreader to seed your grass, feed your lawn or melt the ice on your paths.
