Scotts Easy Hand-Held Broadcast Spreader Review
When you are looking at a hand held spreader you are looking for something lightweight to handle and easy to use. You also want something that is easy to clean out after applications of different products and of course it needs to be small enough to not take up too much space in your tool shed or garage. Lets see how this Scotts spreader matches up…
Features of the Scotts Easy Spreader
Great for small yards
Great for applying seed, ice melt or other granular products on small areas
Holds up to 1,000 sq. ft of Scotts® lawn products
This hand held broadcast spreader is the right size for a smaller garden area, it can cover up to 1000 square feet with one loading if it is not too heavy for you to hold, the size of the hopper can hold enough lawn product to cover that size.
You can use this garden spreader for all granular type garden products like lawn feed, you can also use it to seed your lawn and you can even use it in the winter time to spread ice melt onto your paths and drives.
This Scotts Easy Hand-Held Broadcast Spreader comes from the supplier fully assembled, it has plastic parts which means it is rust proof and it is very easy to use. The spreader consists of the hopper which holds the garden product, the handle which includes the trigger for opening the aperture which the product goes through, there are 5 settings so you can adjust that opening for product and it is changed by using the flow lever. The product is dropped onto the circular spreader which throws it in a semi circular pattern and is controlled by the hand crank.
To use the spreader you would set the flow setting based on the back of the product or you can use these guidelines here:-
For fine grass seed (blue, rye, fine, fescue) use setting 1
Coarser seed (tall fescue) use setting 2
Light fertilizer (Scotts fertilizers at a regular rate) use setting 3
Heavy fertilizer use setting 4
Fertilizer pellets and ice melt products use setting 5
Load the amount of product required based on the size of your lawn, if you have a larger lawn you may need to split it into 2 or 3 areas if the spreader is too heavy to hold for you.
Once you are at the area you want to treat, hold the spreader in front of you, press the trigger on the handle and start turning the hand crank. You need to keep your pace at the same speed and turn the crank at a steady rate and review how well your product is dispersing, if it is giving too much product out you can speed up the cranking which will send the product further, if you get too little product you can slow the speed of cranking the handle to get a thicker layer of product but it will throw it a lesser distance.
You can also adjust your pace to help with getting an even spread. Once you have used the spreader you will get a better idea of how it will work for your step length and you can fine tune your own actions to get it to work the best for you.
