Scotts Wizz Hand-Held Spreader Review
It’s easy to build up lots of items for working in the garden so being able to buy a small hand-held tool that can be hung on the wall to make the best of the space and be flexible enough to work well with a variety of products is a find, for sure. Is it the best hand held spreader, let’s see…
Feature of the Scotts Wizz:
- Features Scotts exclusive Edge Guard and Handy Lock Technologies
- Year-round spreader – Feed, Seed, Weed, Melt
- Holds up to 2,500 sq. ft. of Scotts lawn care products
- Battery-powered 5 ft. broadcast spreader
What is the Scotts Wizz
The Scotts Wizz Hand-Held Spreader is a lightweight container, which can hold and spread a variety of products which are granulated so it can pass easily through the spreader. It’s made of plastic, there is the hopper part which holds the garden products and the spreading part on the bottom which spins the product out powered by 4 x AA batteries, which are held in a battery compartment underneath and it is held closed with a small screw.
There is a dial on the front of the Wizz spreader which gives you the settings for the spreader, details on the back of the label attached on the outside of the hopper on which settings are the correct ones for the product used. There is an edgeguard lever which you can set to protect your neighbours property from your products or so you can limit the ejection of product onto different areas of your own garden, depending on what product is being used.
How to use the Scotts Wizz
This product is very easy to use, begin by preparing the area that you want to spread, it’s also useful to have an approximate size so you can use the right amount of product for your garden. Fill the hopper with the right amount of product required for the whole area you are working on or half if that is going to be too heavy to carry. You can cover an area up to 2500 square feet with this spreader.
Scotts hand held spreader settings
You need to set the aperture to the right setting which you will get from the instructions that came with the Scotts Wizz, or if by any chance you lose that there are sites on the internet which can give guidelines of the settings required by make and model and the product. You also want to turn on the edgeguard so you can protect the non-lawn areas. The edgeguard works on the left of the unit so make sure you walk with the edge of your lawn on your left. Begin walking and pull the trigger at a slow pace, the broadcast area is about 5feet.
Make a perimeter pass around your lawn area with the edgeguard on, then you can make parallel internal passes with the edgeguard off, 5 feet apart so that you should get an even coverage. You can control the speed of the ejection with the trigger and you can also use the trigger lock so that you don’t have to keep your finger on the button. You carry the Scotts Wizz like a suitcase which makes it easier on you back and arms and you can use either hand.
When to use the Scotts Wizz
At the start of the growing season to the end of it you can feed your lawn using the garden spreader, it’s easy to keep handy in the garden shed especially if you will be using it every 6-8 weeks for feeding. If you find you have some bare spots in your lawn you can also use your spreader for grass seed, using the edgeguard will give a more condensed spread for smaller areas.
If you need to treat your lawn will weed killer, as long as it is a granular mix you can use your garden spreader for that too. But don’t put your spreader to the back of the shed as the winter months arrive because you can also use it to spread ice melt to keep your paths safe to walk on. This piece of garden equipment can be useful the whole year round making it a good investment for your home.
A lot of buyers are pleased with the way this spreader works and find it easier than the normal hand held spreaders.
Customers like the fact that it is battery-powered, can be used one handed and has a good dispersion.
This works great on all areas especially good if you can’t get into an area with a walk behind spreader.
The negatives on this Scotts Wizz are that it looks cheap and the label with the instructions on the reverse side is too difficult to get off.
You have to walk with it tilted slightly for the product to fall into the spreader properly.
Can clog up if the particles are too large and then difficult to turn off.
This is a useful tool to have in your shed for a variety of uses over the gardening year. It’s not expensive as gardening tools go, it’s plastic so it doesn’t rust, it can be hung on the wall out of the way and is easy to load and use.
