How we rated the garden spreaders
Ease of Use
We started with how easy it is to use. We looked at how easy it was to fill with product, how easy to set the levels of flow. It has to be easy to hold and control whether it is a hand held, walk behind or tow behind type of spreader. It also helps if it is easy to clean and store.
How well it works
The spreader needs to do the job it was expected to do. If it was hand held it needed to operate well with as little input as possible and spread the product the way it should. Push and tow spreaders needed to move easily over the ground and be easily adjusted to give accurate spread.
Multiple product capability
The spreaders need to be able to handle many products. They also need to be easily cleaned in between so you can get full usage over the whole year.

Top 10 Best Garden Spreaders 2017
#1 Scotts Wizz Hand-Held Spreader
Scotts Wizz Hand-Held Spreader is a very easy to use hand held broadcast spreader. It stands easily on the floor while you fill it with garden products and it can hold enough to cover 2500 square feet. On the Wizz it’s easy to adjust the settings for any product that you need to spread, most products have the setting on the back of the packet and it’s easy to adjust on this spreader with it’s well marked up dial.
Hand held spreaders are usually operated by a hand crank but the Wizz is controlled by battery so you only need to hold the spreader by your side and turn it on and it will broadcast evenly while you walk. This spreader can broadcast 5 feet and also has an edge guard. This guard stops product from shooting out of one side so you can be more accurate around edges of the lawn or borders.
You can use this spreader for all granulated product including ice melt in the winter time. There are 23 settings so you should be able to find the right one for most products. This is a cheap hand held spreader that is capable of working with different products. Best of all it can be useful to you all year round and this is also easy to store. This is why it is our no1 garden spreader.
#2 Scotts Turf Builder EdgeGuard Mini Broadcast Spreader
The Scotts Turf Builder EdgeGuard Mini Broadcast Spreader is a walk behind broadcast spreader. If you have problems with carrying a hand held spreader or you have a bigger garden then this might fit the bill for you. This is a hopper that is pushed with 2 wheels which turn the broadcaster.
It comes from the supplier ready calibrated. It’s very easy to use, just fill with the correct amount of product, it can cover up to 5000 square feet. You just need to set the number on the setting dial to spread the right thickness of product over the area.
It’s best to switch on the edge guard while you do the perimeter of your lawn and take it off when you do the rest. You just need to press the handle to release the product and release to stop when you get to the end of the lawn. This broadcasts 5 feet and makes maintenance quick and easy.
This Scotts Turf Builder is lightweight so no problem with pushing it and it’s small enough to be manoeuvrable around a shaped lawn. With a plastic hopper it is easy to clean out in between use especially useful when using different products. This works best with granular products and can also handle ice melt in the winter time. This is a small product so shouldn’t take up too much room in the tool shed.
#3 Scotts Turf Builder Classic Drop Spreader, (Up to 10,000-sq ft)
The Scotts Turf Builder Classic Drop Spreader is a larger sized walk behind spreader which can handle up to 10,000 square feet. The difference with a drop spreader to a broadcast is that it literally drops the product through the base of the hopper onto the ground. This is a very easy piece of equipment to use, it has a hopper which is 22 inches wide, fill it with product, adjust the settings to the recommended level, pull the lever to release the product and release to stop.
The reason for choosing the Scotts drop spreader over a broadcast spreader is the accuracy of the application, this type of spreader is usually recommended for weedkillers where you want it to go exactly where you need it without any errors and this is perfect for that. You can use it for other types of product but you will find it slower as you’re only doing a 2 foot width of delivery compared to a 5 foot width of spread on a broadcast spreader but the delivery will be more accurate, great for gardens with a lot of flower beds. The time it takes will only be a problem if you have a very large garden. This spreader needs to be recalibrated at the beginning of each season but it is easy to do. If you would prefer the greater accuracy then this type of spreader might be better for you.
#4 Earthway 40 lb. Estate Broadcast Spreader, Garden Seeder, Salt Spreader
The Earthway 40 lb. Estate Broadcast Spreader, Garden Seeder, Salt Spreader is a walk behind broadcast spreader. Earthway is another good make in the garden spreader world. This is an easy to use spreader, one of the differences is the lever system worked by the handle which releases the product is made from metal rods, so less chance to lose accuracy as it’s not a stretchable cable.
This Earthway spreader works in much the same way as push spreaders do, you set the adjustment for the spreader based on the numbers it gives you on the back of the packet, you fill the spreader with the right amount of feed or seed for the area you want to work on. It uses the “Ev-N-Spred” 3-hole drop system, an agitator moves the feed through the holes and onto the spreader plate which broadcasts it out in front of you as you walk.
The Earthway 40 lb. Estate Broadcast Spreader has semi pneumatic wheels to give a smoother ride across the grass. The flow of product can be stopped when you need it to by holding the lever closed and releasing it to re-start the flow. There is a good range of settings which makes it flexible in the amount of different products that you can use, as long as they are granular which is what works best in these type of spreaders. You can also use it with ice melt in the winter time. You can get a lot of use out of this spreader over the year.
#5 Earthway 2750 Hand-Operated Bag Spreader/Seeder
The Earthway 2750 Hand-Operated Bag Spreader/Seeder is a hand held broadcast spreader. This kind of spreader is designed to wear across your chest with the strap over your shoulder a bit like a ladies shoulder bag. The bag is made of nylon material with a zipper on the top so once you have loaded it with product it can be zipped up so nothing is spilled while you get it into place over your shoulder.
The Earthway 2750 can hold up to 25lb of product. There are stiffeners that you can put inside to help with loading your seed. The bag has a plastic base which consists of the spreader plate, a handle and the setting stopper and on/off lever. It’s better to adjust the settings before filling as it is a little more difficult to see the numbers without being close to adjust it.
There is a metal slider on the Earthway 2750 with a small lip on its corner which moves along the settings and can be secured by a wing nut, the on/off lever is spring loaded and is pulled back to open and placed behind the small lip on the slider, when you want to stop you just move the lever off the lip and it will spring back to the closed position. These controls are situated just behind the hand hold so can easily done by your thumb as you are holding on. The broadcasting is done by a crank handle attached on the side. The spread is adjustable based on the speed of the handle turn and the speed of your walking. Most people find this bag spreader very easy to use and it doesn’t take up much space in storage.
